In popular culture, the use of essential oils has been limited to aromatic and therapeutic fields. However, in the recent past, people have realized that these oils harbor various medicinal properties.

Essential oils have been used in eastern culture, primitive medicine, Ayurveda, and homeopathy for centuries. Nowadays, it is commonly found in contemporary medicine, skincare, haircare, and cosmetics. This is due to the new realization that essential oils work as effectively as chemical actives but with less risk and complications. Oils are most popularly used in hair care as oils by nature are nourishing, conditioning, and strengthening and cater to all common hair concerns. 

Peppermint oil

Peppermint oil is an excellent ingredient to induce hair growth. It increases blood flow to the area it is applied to. Research conducted shows that peppermint oil leads to an increase in the number and depth of hair roots. Moreover, it also thickens the scalp.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is efficient for hair health as it is versatile and holistic. Not only does it boost hair growth, but it also curbs dryness and frizziness, dandruff and adds luster to the hair. This oil does not affect the natural chemical balance of the scalp.

Onion oil

Onion oil is one of the best treatments for hair growth. It is rich in vitamins, anti-oxidants, and anti-fungal nutrients. It is a natural conditioner that promotes the regrowth of fallen hair while strengthening brittle hair strands. When it comes to the scalp and hair, onion oil can handle all concerns.

Essential oil mixes for hair growth

The combination of rosemary, lavender, cedar, and thyme has been used for centuries to promote hair growth. These oils are more effective than carrier oils when combined. As a result of blending these oils, a more complex scent will emerge with herbal or woody characteristics.

How to mix essential oils for hair growth and thickness?

1. begin by pouring 1 teaspoon or 5ml of jojoba or grapeseed oil into a 120 ml container.

2. next, add 3 tablespoons or 45ml of alcohol-free witch hazel. If you cannot find an alcohol-free version, use a regular carrier oil in its place.

3. Fill the container with 60 ml of distilled water. If not available, use boiled water after bringing it to room temperature.

4. Then, add 40 drops of your essential oil mixture. The ideal ratio of essential oil should not exceed 1% of the total mix.

5. apply the mixture on wet hair post-cleansing and massage it for 3-4 minutes.

6. comb through your hair and see noticeable results in 6-8 weeks.

Risks and complications.

  1. Always patch test products before application.
  2.  Do not apply essential oils straight to your scalp or skin. On their own, essential oils are very potent and will cause irritation. Always dilute them with carrier oils such as jojoba, grapeseed, hemp, almond, apricot kernel, avocado, or vegetable oil.
  3.  Only use alcohol-free witch-hazel. Alcohol is drying the scalp and can be counterproductive, especially for people with dry scalp. If alcohol-free witch hazel is unavailable, use the carrier oils mentioned above.
